The award is open to graduate degree students of a Canadian university. View the SMC Award Judging Criteria. It should be used for travel costs supporting further interaction with Canadian companies or attendance at one or more conferences or workshops to further the education of the winner. It will be made to the competitor who best demonstrates research with a high-degree of excellence and effective industry-university collaboration.

Ramachandra Achar, Carleton University won the first ever (1997) Strategic Microelectronics Consortium (SMC) Industrial Collaboration Award for his TEXPO'97 demonstration A Novel Method for Efficient Simulation of High-Speed VLSI Designs. (This was Ramachandra's second time as a TEXPO winner--in 1996 he received the $2,000 Canadian Microelectronics Corporation International Travel Award.)
