The Strategic Microelectronics Council (SMC)

The Strategic Microelectronics Council (SMC) of ITAC provides an Industrial Collaboration Award that is focused on research activity arising from university-industry collaboration which has produced substantive results with commercial potential.

The award is open to graduate degree students of a Canadian university. View the SMC Award Judging Criteria. It should be used for travel costs supporting further interaction with Canadian companies or attendance at one or more conferences or workshops to further the education of the winner. It will be made to the competitor who best demonstrates research with a high-degree of excellence and effective industry-university collaboration.

2009

Anthony Karloff (University of Windsor) won the 2009 ITAC/SMC Industrial Collaboration Award for his research demonstration entitled A Resource Efficient, Real-Time, Hardware-Based Image Demosaicing Algorithm.

2008

Chin Pang Billy Siu (University of British Columbia) won the 2008 ITAC/SMC Industrial Collaboration Award for his research demonstration entitled Metal MUMPs Fabrication Process for Dual-Axes Scanning Microlens.

Gholamreza Chaji (University of Waterloo) tied for the first place for the 2007 SMC Industrial Collaboration Award for his presentation entitled A Low-cost Low-power Stable Amorphous Silicon Amoled Display.

Muhammad Arsalan and Atif Shamim (Carleton University) tied for first place for the 2007 SMC Industrial Collaboration Award for their presentation entitled DOSIMETER: Wireless Microchips in LTCC Package for Biomedical and Space Applications.

Amir H. Goldan (Simon Fraser University) won the 2006 SMC Industrial Collaboration Award for his presentation entitled Imaging for Placement of Radioactive seed for Breast Cancer Screening.

2005

The 2005 SMC Industrial Collaboration Award was presented to Mohammad Maymandi-Nejad of the University of Waterloo for his project entitled A Wireless Bio-Implantable Device for Monitoring Blood Pressure of Transgenic Mice.

Jim Kulyk (University of Calgary) won the 2004 SMC Industrial Collaboration Award with his presentation entitled CMOS Integrated Q-Enhanced RF Bandpass Filter.

Mehboob Alam (University of Calgary) won the 2003 SMC Industrial Collaboration Award with his presentation entitled Motion stimation Architecture for MPEG-4 Part 9:  Reference Hardware Description, which focused on research activity arising from university-industry collaboration which has produced substantive results with commercial potential.

The 2002 SMC Industrial Collaboration Award, with a prize of $3,000, was won by Rola Baki and Mourad El-Gamal of McGill University, for her poster presentation A Low-Power Fully Programmable Log-Domain Filter for Hard Disk Drive Applications.

John Rogers, Carleton University won the 1998 Strategic Microelectronics Consortium (SMC) Industrial Collaboration Award for his TEXPO'98 demonstration A 1.8 GHz Differential VCO in a 0.5-micron Bipolar Process.

1997

Ramachandra Achar, Carleton University won the first ever (1997) Strategic Microelectronics Consortium (SMC) Industrial Collaboration Award for his TEXPO'97 demonstration A Novel Method for Efficient Simulation of High-Speed VLSI Designs. (This was Ramachandra's second time as a TEXPO winner--in 1996 he received the $2,000 Canadian Microelectronics Corporation International Travel Award.)
