In 2001, more than 10 percent of Canada’s GDP
was devoted to health care; this was the second highest
proportion of all OECD countries with publicly funded,
universal access health care systems [age adjusted spending
data, Esmail and Walker, 2004]. The goal of achieving
greater efficiencies and better service in this sector
is a major driver in Canada’s need to exploit
microsystems innovations. Microsystems enable time-sensitive
research, creative treatment solutions and effective
connections between patients and resources.
