This national direction aligns with long‑standing efforts across Canada’s innovation ecosystem to move AI from research into real‑world deployment through applied technologies, advanced hardware, and industry‑focused pathways.
“Canada’s AI strategy reflects priorities many organizations across the ecosystem have been advancing for years,” said Gordon Harling, President and CEO of CMC Microsystems. “We are encouraged to see a national framework that supports applied innovation and creates the conditions needed for AI adoption at scale.”
Programs Supporting the National AI Strategy
A number of programs delivered by CMC are aligned with Canada’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy.
FABrIC, a Strategic Response Fund initiative of the Government of Canada focused on advancing domestic capabilities in semiconductor design and manufacturing, supports:
- Challenges
The development of advanced semiconductor and intelligent system technologies, enabling AI‑ready hardware and edge‑intelligent products that strengthen domestic capability and support made‑in‑Canada innovation.
- Training and Upskilling
The development of highly qualified personnel through access to advanced tools, infrastructure, and experiential learning, supporting workforce readiness for AI‑enabled systems and advanced computing.
- Quantum Computing Sandbox
Access to quantum computing environments for researchers and companies exploring next‑generation computational approaches that complement AI and advanced data processing.
In addition to FABrIC, CMC delivers complementary programs that further support innovation, commercialization, and ecosystem development across Canada’s advanced technology landscape:
- Virtual Incubation Environment (VIE)
Support for startups and scale‑ups through access to advanced design tools, computing resources, and ecosystem partnerships, helping translate AI research into deployable products and services.
- DUET (Dual‑Use and Emergency Technologies)
A proposed initiative focused on strengthening industry–academic collaboration and accelerating the development and deployment of AI‑enabled, security‑driven technologies that support resilience and integrated hardware–software innovation.
Delivering on Canada’s AI ambitions requires strong collaboration. CMC works with partners across the ecosystem — including Talent Innovation Canada (TICAN) and Bold New Edge — to support talent development, industry adoption, and the responsible deployment of AI.
Looking Ahead
CMC looks forward to continued collaboration with government, academia, industry, and ecosystem partners to support the implementation of Canada’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy and to help position Canada as a global leader in responsible and impactful AI innovation.
